CBD OIL FOR DOGS – HEMP HYPE OR DOGGIE DREAM?

CBD OIL FOR DOGS – HEMP HYPE OR DOGGIE DREAM?

Our pets are family. When they’re hurt, sick, or scared, those helpless little eyes looking to us for comfort can melt your heart. If you’re a pet parent, you’ve probably searched far and wide for answers to your dog’s joint pain, separation anxiety, or digestive issues. And on your search, you’ve probably come across CBD oil for dogs and wondered, “What’s the deal?”

Today we’re going to talk about some research that shows exciting potential benefits of CBD for your dog. Most of this research was done using either humans or mice/rats, so more study is needed. But here’s what we know so far.

CBD won’t get your dog high

CBD stands for cannabidiol, which is a non-psychoactive component of hemp. It can’t get you or your dog high. THC is the psychoactive component of hemp and marijuana that produces the “high.” Full spectrum CBD oil for dogs will probably have a trace amount of THC, but it won’t be nearly enough to produce any psychoactive effects. If you’re concerned about your dog ingesting THC, choose a CBD isolate instead.

Studies show CBD oil may help treat anxiety

Multiple studies have shown that CBD soothes some symptoms of anxiety. Whether your dog suffers from separation anxiety or gets stressed during fireworks, thunderstorms, and when you’ve got company over, studies are showing some promising effects of CBD.

In this study, participants were divided into groups for a public speaking experiment. The group that received CBD beforehand showed far lower levels of anxiety markers. Your dog probably doesn’t do a lot of public speaking, but if CBD can lessen mankind’s greatest fear, that’s a powerful result.

CBD’s effects on anxiety are well documented, as in this study that suggests CBD has the ability to reduce anxiety in people with generalized social anxiety disorder, and this study which shows that CBD reduces anxiety in animals.

CBD for pains and arthritis in dogs

Numerous studies have shown the benefits of CBD for chronic pain. As older dogs slow down because of arthritis, their owners scramble to find treatments that will give their pets back the pain-free movement they once had. Multiple studies, including this one, show that CBD has been proven to help soothe arthritis in mice. Studies like this one continue to support the important role the endocannabinoid system plays in the possible treatment of arthritis with CBD.

CBD for digestive disorders

People have been using marijuana to calm digestive disorders for centuries. Endocannabinoid receptors are scattered throughout the gut, and are involved in the regulation of gastrointestinal processes like food intake, inflammation, nausea, sensation, and more according to this study. Not only does the endocannabinoid system protect the GI tract from inflammation and abnormally high gastric secretions, it also may be a promising treatment for a range of gastrointestinal disorders, as stated in this study.
